The relationship between breakfast, health and school performance in adolescents
Summary

The objective of this report is to compare the adolescents who are skipping breakfast and having breakfast regularly and to know the relationship between breakfast and health & school performance in adolescents. The reason for this is to make adolescent notice the importance of breakfast.

Breakfast have already considered as an essential meal for adolescents to supply adequate nutrition for develop and growth. Nevertheless, the rate of skipping breakfast, which decreased few years ago, has gradually increased again in recent years in Korea. In addition, the rate has been increasing. A lot of studies show that skipping breakfast increases the risk for obesity, many adult diseases, and poor academic performance. The recommended breakfast for adolescents is low sugar, and a lot of dietary fiber. The hunger after skipping breakfast can lead to additional intake of foods, which is related with consumption of calories. Breakfast is also related with mental health. It influenced on mood, memory, attention and so on.

The only source of the energy of the brain is glucose. To make glucose, organism discomposes polysaccharides to a monosaccharide after taking it. By eating breakfast, we can make enough glucose to make our brain work.

Introduction

The definition of the word ¡®Breakfast¡¯ is breaks a fast. ¡®Fast¡¯, the state occurred due to eat nothing during sleeping. Moreover, our body use all energy made the day before in metabolism even we are sleeping. Particularly adolescents have a fast metabolism than adults. Then, it made the energy left is too little to start a day. It needs energy which is essential to start a day and so, it¡¯s necessary for our life to have breakfast.

Adolescence is critical period to develop healthy eating habit and behavior patterns. Thus, breakfast goes without saying that is considered the most important meal especially for adolescents if it supposed to relate with both of them.

According to studies, people who regularly have breakfast are more likely to have nutrient intakes including higher intake of dietary fiber, carbohydrate, and lower fat and cholesterol. Also, it helps micronutrients to absorb. In other words, having breakfast regularly made it enough to start a day with healthy body and fully filled energy.

Breakfast is often means the meal eaten in the early morning before the day¡¯s work. However, for example, to the people who start a day from evening, breakfast is not the meal eaten in the early morning. Like this, there are individual variations. So, it cannot help but limit the definition of breakfast. Additionally, this report will deal with the relation of breakfast and youth¡¯s health and academic performance. So, in this report, the meaning of breakfast is limited as a meal take in the morning before go to the school.

A lot of studies insist that having breakfast has impact on mental health not only body health. But in this report the main thing that will be dealing with the relation with breakfast and body health associated with metabolism. This issue will be considered in terms of biology, sociology, and culture.
